A Complete Self Storage Guide for the Fall

You had a fantastic summer and now fall is just around the corner. At this point, you might be wondering what to do with all the summer items and patio furniture. Since the chances of getting much use from these items during the fall are low, you might want to store them in a safe and secure place for use in the future. If you’ve been trying to figure out the most appropriate place to put your summer items then you’re in luck - we’re going to give you some cool self-storage ideas that you can use during the fall to store all your belongings.

Items to consider Storing

Storage space is limited. So, before diving right into some self-storage ideas, you should know which items are even worth putting away. You might want to store the following things:

  • Patio furniture
  • Pool accessories
  • Gardening equipment, plants,
  • Clothing
  • The Grill (can’t forget that)
  • Self-storage Ideas to Get You Ready for the Fall

When talking about storing items for the fall, it is always better to come with a long-term solution you can use throughout multiple seasons. A one-off storage solution or idea is not good for the long term, now is it? If you lack space at home, your best bet is to rent a self storage unit to put away your extra summer items. Here are some creative ways you can make use of the space around your home to store your summer items during the fall season.

    Patio Furniture

Furniture items are a massive space hog. If you have a pretty large shed that is great. You should be able to fit some of the furniture in there, safely tucked away to be used in the following summer. For most though, you will have to store them outside. Put a protective covering on top of them to protect them from the elements. If your furniture allows it, you can even stack some of them on top of each other to space even more space.

Just remember to give the cushions and furniture a good scrub before putting them away. The last thing you want is your furniture developing mildew or mold. As for your cushions and smaller items from the patio invest in storage compartments. Or better yet, if we are talking about self-storage, why not make some DIY storage solutions. This way you can build one that is the perfect size for your belongings and you learn a cool new skill in the process too. If you have patio chairs that can be used inside the house, bring them in. Use them till next time they are needed outside.

    Pool Accessories

Pool accessories can also be stored in the shed or garage – if you have space. Otherwise, you can use deck boxes for neat storage options. Get a towel caddy with a hamper to store towels and more. Pool noodles can be stored in a laundry basket. Some pool noodles can be a bit too long for just one basket though. You can tie two baskets together to provide more support for the noodles.

    Gardening Equipment and Plants

Gardening tools and equipment can be easily stored in large storage containers and tucked away in a corner of your garage or shed. For long tools like rakes, you can use a barrel to store them. These barrels can also be used to store your garden hoses as well. Or of course, you can also use a storage box. If you DIY and make a box yourself, that's even better.

Have plant pots in the garden? Why not bring them inside the home. It keeps the plants safe and also makes your rooms look a bit nicer too. For lawnmowers, take out the battery and store it in a cool dry place. Your garage can be a perfect solution for both your lawnmower and its blades.

Smaller items like gardening tools can be stored on a hanging organizer. They have lots of pouches for you to store gloves, screwdrivers, drill bits, etc. They are durable and also do not take much space either. You can easily hang these on the walls of your shed or garage and voila more storage by putting wall space to good use.

    Clothing

For clothing that won’t be used during the fall, first, be honest with yourself. Which clothing items will you be wearing next summer? You can give some clothes to charity and the rest that you want to keep can be neatly stored up in a clothing rack. Roll up the clothes and store them instead of folding. This prevents creases. Also, make sure to store them in a fabric bag. We highly recommend against plastic bags. Fabric bags allow air to pass through which protects your precious clothes from damage.

Another very cost-effective way of storing summer clothes for the fall are storage boxes. You can find compact storage boxes with ample storage space. Make sure you get ones made from cast polypropylene. They are the safest for your clothes.

    Do Not Forget the Grill

Can’t forget the grill, can we? To store the grill safely for the fall, give it a thorough clean first. For gas grills, disconnect the burner, coat the burner and other metal parts of the grill with oil. This will repel any moisture and also help with rust. You can store it in the shed or take it back to the garage, except the burner, of course. Cover the grill up in plastic for safekeeping, this should keep it safe when it is not in use. Keep the burner in a cool or dry place.

If you have a charcoal grill, again clean it thoroughly before you put it away. You can spray some cooking oil and rub it down with a paper towel. Finally, cover the grill in a protective covering and store it away till the next time.

Storing summer items during the fall does not have to be a hassle. These self-storage ideas and tips are easy to follow and should help you deal with storing items away to better prepare for the fall. Before you know it, it will be time to put those items away and prepare to store items for the winter season. At least you know you’ll be prepared!
