As one of the largest film, interactive and music festivals and concerts South by Southwest (SXSW) gets ready to wrap this week, we’ve seen the introduction of a variety of new online marketing initiatives. One such was Meerkat, a new video streaming app that allows people to view live video directly from Twitter. Not to be left out of the action, Twitter, which got a lot of its notoriety at SXSW in 2007, acquired its own video streaming app this week as it took over startup company Periscope.
Periscope, which is not yet publicly available, is an app that captures and shares live video. In January, the startup company and Twitter finalized the deal in January but there are no details available yet about when the app will launch. Both companies have been tight-lipped so far about the details of the merger but Periscope confirmed the takeover this week with a tweet.
Twitter’s acquisition may change the face of social media marketing for the second half of the year. Periscope is already poised to compete with Meerkat, which is already available in the App Store. The app has gained significant popularity since its introduction. In fact, White House’s Josh Earnest was interviewed using the app this week.
Live video streaming via social media has been the natural next step for quite some time. The popularity of apps like Vine and SnapChat demonstrate that social media users yearn to connect in more ways that just words and pictures. This introduction will no doubt influence the activity of self storage marketers as they prepare to adapt marketing messages for this audience.
Your self storage business could benefit from this feature by providing real-time updates about the state of your facility with interested customers. Imagine if a customer wants to see a storage unit and you don’t already have a video available, you could just show the customer via a live stream, easily and conveniently right from your Twitter profile.
Meerkat and Periscope are the only two apps of this kind available at this point in time. However, SnapChat does have a live video chat feature, but this would require two users who have SnapChat. The advantage of Meerkat and Periscope is that anyone with the link can view the stream, without having to download any additional apps.
